How Does the Gas Lift Work in a Bar Stool?
Gas lift bar stools work in a similar way to the gas lift action on height-adjustable chairs. The purpose of the gas lift is to make it easier to alter the height on the bar stool, so people don’t have to do it manually every time.
It works through a cylinder inside the bar stool. This contains two chambers: one so that compressed gas can get in and another one so that it can get out. These are known as pneumatic cylinders and they are what causes the bar stool to rise (by letting gas into the chamber and forcing upwards) and sink down again (by letting the gas drain out so the releasing pressure brings it back down).
One of the most popular gas lift options for bar stools works using a piston. This is where compressed air or gas is forced through a valve into the back of a piston, which then pushes the height of the bar stool upwards. The valve will then stay closed, keeping the stool in place until the mechanism is worked again and weight is put onto the bar stool. This is what forces the air back out, relieving the pressure on the piston.
The piston will then stay in its original position until the gas lift mechanism is operated again and more air is let back into the chamber. Over time, the pneumatic spring will run out but the cylinders can be replaced when they do so this shouldn’t cause too many problems.
