The humble bar stool

THE HUMBLE BAR STOOL

Hundreds of years ago the humble bar stool found its niche in alehouses, where drinkers could meet and sit around and pass the time of day (or evening).  All those years ago the bar stool was simply made from wood, generally having three legs and would be used just as somewhere to rest.  Today, the bar stool has evolved into something quite different and unique.

No longer are bar stools just seen in public houses or bars, but in homes where the designs have evolved from the plain three-legged wooden stool to extremely comfortable, colourful stools offering trendy designs with foot rests, arms rests and back rests if required, and are often used to complement other furnishings within the home.

Bar stools can be made from metal or wood, either with basic or detailed designs, have Perspex, wooden, plastic or leather seats, padded seats, back and arm rests offering the user a comfortable experience.

Bar stools really came into their own within the home environment during the 1950s when people bought them to use at breakfast bars or for those who had mini-bars in their homes.  With their narrow design, the stools did not take up a great deal of space and were portable.

Today, the range of bar stools is extensive – in every colour to suit the individual or surroundings.  Many homes today are tight on space and have no room for a formal dining room table and chairs and many people use their breakfast bars to sit and eat at, and the bar stool is easily the best solution for seating, offering the correct height and comfortable seating.

Bar stools today are beautifully designed with cheerful colours, cutting edge designs and are very often a trendy ‘must have’.  They are informal but beautiful.

Returning to the alehouses of yesteryear, the bar stools in public houses are far more comfortable and come in a range of sizes, from low stools that can be pulled up to a table to the tall stools used at the bars.  They are also found in wine bars, restaurants and snack bars and there are stools that can remain in situ by having them floor mounted, stools that swivel, stools with adjustable height, even stacking bar stools.

The origins of the first stool appears to be lost in a time warp, but was certainly one of the first pieces of simple furniture to be made by man.  How far we have come from those early days.

So versatile is the bar stool that it is hard to imagine that from a humble, low, three-legged designed stool that would have evolved from a piece of wood in the hands of a carpenter hundreds of years ago through to the exquisite art deco designs of the 1920s and 1930s when elegance was paramount, from the clean, simple lines of the 1950s bar stool to the beautiful designs of the 21st century.  The bar stool has certainly stood the test of time, providing us with comfortable and portable seating.
