Building and Decorating a Home Bar

A home bar is a great place to relax with your family and enjoy a tipple with friends. To get the most out of your home bar, you will need to carefully consider its design and decoration. Your home bar should reflect your personality while providing the utmost practicality and the best possible atmosphere. If you are a keen DIY enthusiast, you could create and install your own home bar. However, if DIY is not your forte, you could enlist the help of an expert.

There are four main varieties of bar designs that you will be able to choose from. These are: the straight bar, the back bar, the L-shaped bar and the corner bar. The type of bar you choose for your home will depend on your personal preferences, your budget and the space available.

Straight Bar

A straight bar is typically installed at the end of a room, with the length of the bar spanning the room's width. Your drinks can be stored under the countertop and your bar stools can be positioned in a row along the length of the bar.

Back Bar

A back bar comprises three main parts: a straight bar at the front that forms the counter, an open-plan middle portion, and a display case on the wall behind the counter.

L-shaped Bar

As its name suggests, the L-shape bar takes on the shape of an 'L'. Bar stools can be arranged on both the long and short sides of the L countertop. A sink could be plumbed into the short side of the countertop.

Corner Bar

A corner bar is likely to be your ideal solution if you are short on space. Possessing top and bottom cabinets, this type of bar offers plentiful storage. Bar stools can be positioned in a semi-circle, all the way around the outside of the curved countertop.

Once you have decided on the best type of bar for your needs, you will need to consider your décor. The décor of your bar should bring your bar to life. If you enjoy spending time in traditional sports bars, you may wish for your bar to reflect a sporting theme. If upscale bars are more your type of hangout, you may desire a modern bar with ambient lighting.

The seating that you choose for your home bar is imperative to the enjoyment that your bar brings. Bar stools remain the top choice for home bars. However, if space permits, you could opt for extra seating in the form of lounge chairs or comfy sofas. When choosing seating for your bar, ensure that your chosen furniture is both stylish, comfortable and easy to clean. Your furniture should reflect the theme of your bar. If, for example, you opt for a traditional bar, a bar stool such as the Genova Bar Stool in Brown Leather could be used to reflect the classic look you are trying to create.

Vintage posters or classic prints can provide you with a timeless way in which to enhance the look of your bar. If you are short on space, you may wish to consider hanging mirrors to create the illusion of additional space.
